In recent times, there has been a growing and commendable culture of honouring accomplished leaders of thought and distinguished statesmen across various spheres such as academia, the judiciary, the clergy, industry, and beyond through public lectures on topical and contemporary issues, particularly at the point of retirement or upon the completion of distinguished service.

It was therefore not surprising when, sometime in January this year, I received a telephone call from the Honourable Justice H. M. Ogunwumiju, JSC, Chancellor of the Diocese of Ibadan, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). With deep passion and courtesy, she made a heartfelt request, insisting that I would not decline her appeal. She invited me to deliver a public lecture in honour of an iconic servant of God who has devoted decades of faithful service in the Lord’s vineyard and who would be bowing out of active ministry in May 2026 upon attaining the age of 70, The Most Reverend Dr. Joseph Olatunji Akinfenwa.

This lecture is set against the backdrop of a life of remarkable service, leadership, and spiritual impact, and it provides an opportunity to reflect on enduring values, legacy, and the evolving role of faith leaders in contemporary society.
