Each type of protection serves a unique purpose and offers different benefits depending on what a creator intends to protect. Copyright protects original works of authorship, such as literary, musical, and other artistic works during the lifetime of the author and 70 years after the death of the author. It protects cinematograph films, photographs, sound recordings, and broadcasts, for 50 years from the date of publication. It is, however, important to note that copyright only covers the expression of ideas, but not the ideas themselves.
